Thank you, Peter. Let's hope that contrarianism, ignorance, and the creators of chaos, don't catch on here in Canada. And you're right: those of us born near the end, and after WW2, grew up in a world of optimism—because, surely, after the world had plunged to its most horrific depths, "hit bottom", so to speak, it would learn its lesson and never go back. That optimism was false: turns out you can never overly underestimate human nature.
Indeed, it's impossible not to be affected by the coming chaos that surrounds us. In Mexico, Trump will impose a 25 percent tariff on day one, despite that hurting the American car manufactures who rely on Mexico to do their assembly. And internationally in general an idolatry of Putin and Netanyahu, as well as other authoritarians, will radically change America's position in the world as ultra nationalism takes hold. And there is so very much more to be concerned about that it truly makes one weep.
Thanks for addressing the elephant in the room. One cannot proceed on any meaningful discourse without that.
This is so eloquent Peter. Thank you for voicing what so many of us are feeling but with the added clarity of your specialized knowledge and experience. Let us hope that by the time there is a change of government in our own country, we will be more prudent and wary given what we are seeing down south.
Thank You for touching the send. Yes, we are very vulnerable & it so nice to have some like-minded ppl still in our lives. I never thought we could be so isolated because of our beliefs. We lived in the Best of Times! I'm glad you're back, I was getting worried. We are stronger together.
"Cheer up", the damage will be much worse than just our health. The Department of Health and Human Services controls NIH, the chief medical research engine of the world, which attracts the world's brightest minds to the USA and has enormous economic impact. I presume that Kennedy and his fellow cost cutting efficiency nincompoops (Musk and Ramaswamy) will gut the NIH taking away America's edge on biomedical science with its secondary huge industrial spinoff sector. This will make America weak and poor again, with rapidly diminishing biotech, weakened secondary educational institutions, and declining medical knowledge and practice.
Thank you Peter for breaking this down. The attack on science is not new but to think it has power again is horrifying. Denial of abortions to women could die otherwise is draconian as is not being prepared for outbreaks of polio or other diseases that could make their way back into schools. And what makes it even more heartbreaking is that they will dismantle the healthcare system that protects the poor and vulnerable. Yes, the HOPE bubble has been popped for me. I pray it will be inflated again for my children.
Thank you, Peter. We are all just reeling in fear and despair and hopelessness here...reaching for any rays of bright sunshine that we can find. That better world that we have grown up working to be a part of just became...a regression into such bigotry, misogyny, racism, pendejo-ism and more. Ugh.
I’m with you, Peter! It’s thoroughly demoralizing and horrific. I just can’t believe it has come to this. It’s really hard to hold out any hope at this point.
Thanks for writing this Peter. Hard to believe that it has come to this. We were so hopeful for a better world. I'm depressed but I think there is some hope left in me.

I’m with you Peter…so well written, as always, exactly my feelings.

U. S. citizens' distrust of their federal government will surely grow during the Trump administration. That's a slippery slope leading to chaos.
How I wish we could wake up from this nightmare!
